Biography: Titus family's fortunes began to improve under Claudius and Titus was educated with his son, Britannicus until the latter was poisoned by Nero. He went on to serve as military tribune in Germany and Britain and then under his father in the Jewish War, where he was the commander in charge when the Temple fell and Jerusalem was taken. He was instrumental in the accession of his father in 69, became a Caesar and Praetorian Prefect, an office he held concurrently with other honors, and succeeded Vespasian smoothly in 79. As a Praetorian Prefect he had to carry out his father's dirty work and that earned him widespread hostility. Titus obsession with Berenice, a member of the Judaean royal family, did not help either. Once on the throne, however, Titus quickly made up and acquired the reputation of one of the best Roman emperors ever. He poured disaster relief into the area of Pompeii and Herculaneum after the cities were wiped out by an eruption of Vesuvius; threw in enormous amount of money to rebuild Rome, ruined by fire even as relief work in Pompeii's area was going on; and provided generously for the survivors of the plague that devastated the capital shortly thereafter. It was in the middle of such laudable works, in the hot summer months of 81 that Tutus went down with a fever from which he never recovered. Fingers had been pointed at his brother Dimitian ever since, but the charges were never substantiated.
