Is this a coin

Hi there. Hope i'm not wasting anyones time. I was given a pendant - pic attached i hope - and was told that it used to be a coin - aprox 500 yrs old from somewhere in the east, but that it had lost its value when they drilled a hole in it to make said pendant. Any ideas. Will appreciate some feed back. Thanks:D mmh apparantly can't add a photo, but will be happy to email it to anyone that can help. its silver with a 'pettaled' edge with eastern symbols on it.
