For a long time I was trying to obtain a good example illustrating the definition of "Tooling" coins.
Finally I got not one but two coins. Here is the copper As of Lucius Verus. Check for the Domitian's Sestertius.
The engraving process follows the original forms enhancing the contour. Sometimes it just cleans the accumulation over the coin sometimes it goes in the material to make the details more relief. Microscope and knowledge for recognizing artificial patination will make easy to determine a tooled coin. There are other procedures for adding material, gluing, and many other forms of repairing, but they are much easy to be recognized.
